Over the weekend I was invited to photograph LA’s attempt to set a world record by continuously pouring about 21,200 cubic yards of concrete as part of the Wilshire Grand Project for 20 hours!
Beginning early Saturday night, more than 2,100 truckloads of 21,200 cubic yards of concrete weighing 82 million pounds — the weight of 250 blue whales, the world’s largest mammal — were poured to form the building’s foundation on the northwest corner of Seventh and Figueroa streets. On hand for the historic event were Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, 14th District Councilman Jose Huizar and Speaker of the California State Assembly John Perez, among others.
“We Set the record,” spokesman Sean Rossall said Sunday night, noting the pour wrapped without incident and crews were readying to re-open streets. The concrete will cool for 14 days, with the help of 60 tons of chillers, six chilled water pumps and two 20,000-gallon storage tanks.
